K-Pop Throwback: Clap Your Hands If You Want To Relive The Exhilaration Of The 2012 Wonder Girls Hit 'Like This' [VIDEO]

It's easy to forget in the age of digital glitz and the media blitz that the best pop songs start with a simple idea.

In the case of "Like This," the 2012 K-pop classic from Wonder Girls, it's a simple handclap pattern that is the springboard for a dance groove that sounds as fresh and as innovative as it did the day it was released.

Anchored around a mostly one-note bassline, "Like This" is difficult to nail down as having one particular influence or even being from one specific genre. But this is a major part of the song's appeal.

By keeping the production extraordinarily sparse with only stripped down vocals and a few acid-washed synth sounds, the originality of each member is accentuated in a way that is increasingly rare in K-pop or pop music internationally.

This is dance music without a safety net, a vibe accentuated by the wonderfully inventive music video for "Like This," featuring the then five members of Wonder Girls provoking a flash mob in a South Korean shopping center that culminates in over 100 shoppers dancing along to the track.

Coupled with the power of the track, the video for "Like This" is gritty and unpretentious, but also surprisingly moving.

Though Wonder Girls is now officially a three-member group, on a hiatus since November of 2012 (five months after "Like This" was released), that some fans fear is permanent, there is always a need for more bands like them, willing to take chances.

It is only the risk takers with the clout to be heard that ever inspire new sounds and styles in pop music, no matter where you call home.
