K-Pop Beyond The Charts: Unwind With The Soulful Sounds Of R&B Duo VERRY's 'We Can Luv' Featuring Odee [AUDIO]

K-Pop Beyond The Charts is a weekly review column highlighting Korea's modern day musical innovators who have yet to find mainstream success.

It's easy when perusing the new releases coming out of South Korea day in and day out to get frustrated with what can only be described as the cuteness factor. This isn't just a trend in K-pop, but everywhere from rock to folk to hip-hop and electro.

One could wallpaper their apartment with a week's worth of wholesome Korean ballad releases with nearly identical cartoonish album covers. That's why it is exciting to see South Korean female R&B duo VERRY evoking the same warm fuzzy feeling that images of rabbits in home recording studios are presumably reaching for.

With a powerful beat and a vocal performance straight from the heart, VERRY's latest single "We Can Luv" featuring rapper Odee, released on Thursday, manages to be both soothing and moving.

Tipping their hat musically to previous masters of the slow jam like D'Angelo, Sade, and R. Kelly, VERRY conjures up a mood that is intoxicating and addictive. There is also an undeniable resemblance in vibe and production style to Frank Ocean's 2012 album "channel ORANGE."

Yet with their original voices and blend of hot and cool sounds, "We Can Luv" strikes the perfect balance of being a ballad with some serious kick.

Rapper Odee delivers a performance reminiscent of legendary hip-hop producer Timbaland's guest appearances with another clear influence on this group, Aaliyah.

And though VERRY has yet to receive any press in the Western media (until now, that is) these two girls have a talent that deserves to be heard beyond their native borders.

And with a sound this enjoyable to listen to, it seems likely that they will be.
