Jodi Arias Trial Update Today: Judge Sherry Stephens sentenced Jodi Arias to a natural life sentence with no possibility of parole. The Jodi Arias retrial ends a seven year legal ordeal that captivated most of the nation. Arias was convicted of first degree murder in May 2013 for the 2008 murder of her lover, Travis Alexander. Alexander was found dead in the shower of his Mesa, Ariz., home in June 2008. He had been shot in the head, stabbed nearly 30 times, and his throat had been slit.

 Arias will likely appeal her conviction.

At today's hearing, Judge Stephens had to rule on whether Arias would serve her natural life in prison or have the possibility of parole after 25 years. Alexander's sisters asked that Arias receive the maximum penalty availables.

The judge sentenced convicted murderer Jodi Arias after two juries could not reach an unanimous decision on whether to sentence her to death to life in prison. The only decision that remained was whether the judge would allow Arias to be eligible for release after 25 years.

Defense lawyers detailed allegations of misconduct against prosecutor Juan Martinez. The criminal-defense community is reportedly assembling a dossier on Martinez with the intent of filing a complaint to the State Bar of Arizona regarding his conduct in the Arias case and others.

"It's my firm belief that death would bring me untold peace and freedom. If I die today, I would be free and I would be at peace," Arias said in Maricopa County Court. "I realize how selfish it would be if I escaped."

Jodi Arias was convicted of first-degree murder on May 8, 2013 in the June 2008 death of Travis Alexander. Alexander was found murdered in the shower of his Mesa, Ariz., home in June 2008. Alexander's throat had been violently slit, he was stabbed 27 times and shot in the head.

Throughout the trial, Arias consistently maintained that she acted in self-defense.

"To this day I cannot believe I was capable of doing something that terrible," Arias said. "I'm truly disgusted and I'm repulsed with myself. I wish there was some way I could take it back."
