Gain Discusses Korean Censorship And The Possibility Of Promoting In The U.S. With Billboard

Brown Eyed Girls member Gain had an in-depth interview with American music magazine Billboard, where she discussed the inspiration behind her latest Hawwah mini-album, Korean censorship and the possibility of promoting in the United States.

One of Gain's most interesting revelations related to her album title. Although in the Bible "Hawwah" is the classic Hebrew name for Eve, Gain asserted that her album had no religious context. She explained, "My album is not related to the Bible, actually. It was a kind of fiction made from a character in the Bible. So, I tried to understand this concept as a story not as a religious material."

When the topic switched to South Korea's censorship regulations and conservative nature, when compared to the Western entertainment industry, Gain had a very nonchalant attitude. She stated, "Being conservative is unavoidable, I think...As I said before, music programs have inevitable regulations - like its airing time, the age of its viewers - so it's the norm [that many songs are released] to be accepted by all. So, sometimes I feel sorry but I should accept it."

Gain also asserted that she has never turned down a song for fear of controversy and embraces artistic freedom. She revealed, "Composers and lyric-writers make songs and lyrics thinking about me as the singer. I never want to interrupt their freedom of expression because of restrictions. Actually, I accept those restrictions as rather interesting because most concepts I've done are not easy to express and pull off. Sometimes, it causes controversy and gets hit with an age restriction. I think this is my personal color, so, I think I don't worry that much."

When asked if she would consider promoting in America, Gain was both enthusiastic and hesitant. She confessed, "Even though I work based in the Korean music scene, now we can share the contents globally via media like YouTube. With a good opportunity, I'd love to try to promote in America. But I think I still need much more preparation."
