K-Pop Beyond The Charts: Moonshine And Giriboy Will Shake You Out Of Your Funk On 'Cliché' [AUDIO]

K-Pop Beyond The Charts is a weekly review column highlighting Korea's modern day musical innovators who have yet to find mainstream success.

Though it is inarguably as funky as anything on the South Korean pop charts right now, "Cliché," the new track released on Wednesday by Moonshine And Giriboy, has yet to receive virtually any attention in the West.

This is unfortunate for everyone.

With their feet firmly planted in early 1980s electro pop, Moonshine and Giriboy create a highly evocative and rejuvenating mood on "Cliché," like that sunny day at summer camp that you always remember, to get you through hard times.

The song also contains some strong nods to 1990s slow jam melody makers like Tony! Toni! Toné! or Boys II Men, with the intro definitely being one of those moments.

Offering definitive proof that you shouldn't judge a song from the first 20 seconds, when the backbeat to "Cliché" kicks in, Moonshine and Giriboy make it clear that this is no reflective ballad telling the tale of lost love or a rejected ex pleading for a former fling's forgiveness.

Both performers turn what could have been a simple joining of two musical clichés (see what I did there?) into something that is completely original and their own. Moonshine and Giriboy's unique styles also happen to complement each other quite well. They would be well suited to collaborate more frequently, come up with a band name even.

But whether they stick with the Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young style of band name or not, one thing is for sure; these two artists sure know how to turn a funky beat into a work of art.
