January K-Pop Report: Dramatic Changes, Hip-Hop Emerges, Unit Groups Expand, 'Positive Energy for 2013'

Today is the last day of January and although it may seem like a short amount of time, much has happened in the music industry. By looking at the results of January, we can make a prediction for the music industry this year.

1. Top Idols Still Gain Support Even After Going Through Dramatic Changes

The number one hot issue this month would be Girls' Generation with their drastic change in concept and music. 

Early this month, Girls' Generation released their 4th album with their title song, "I Got a Boy." This song ranked number 1 on music charts and is still currently in the top 10 even after 30 days.

Their dramatic change allowed them to be more happy and successful with their comeback.

Their song featured a mix of genres from pop, retro, urban to electronic. Their energetic choreography and tough style shocked many fans.

Although their was some controversy in the beginning, now fans and media alike are raving about them.

Girls' Generation revealed that making a drastic change can also prove to be successful.

2. Comedian singers-Hip-Hop scene Take Over Charts

In January, comedian singers and hip-hop artists have received much love from the public as well.

This month, MBC show "Infinite Challenge" conducted an episode of songs produced by Park Myung Soo. Of all the songs, comedian Jung Hyung Don's "Gangbuk Fancy Pants" received much support and attention from the public.

Although this also had a bit of controversy about comedians delving into singing, nonetheless, comedians received attention and acceptance with their fun and creative songs.

The hip-hop scene was also successful this month. Group Baechigi topped charts with their new song, "Shower of Tears." 

Leessang also released "Tears" and ranked number 1 on charts as well.

This month revealed that not only idols, but also hip-hop artists are making their way to the top of the charts.

3. Unit Groups Expand

This month, idol group unit groups have become quite popular.

Group INFINITE members Dongwoo and Hoya have been created into a unit duo called INFINITE H. 

4minute members Jun Ji Yoon and Huh Gayoon also came out as a unit group called 2Yoon. They revealed a fun and quirky song that revealed a new genre of country pop.

Group SISTAR will also be coming back today with their unit group SISTAR19. It has been over a year since their comeback and many fans have been waiting patiently.

Many are also curious to see what other unit groups will form this upcoming year.

4. 'K-Pop Syndrome' Looks to be Hopeful

Looking internationally, it looks like the 'K-Pop Snydrome' has continued on to this year.

Psy has continued to show his global popularity through his many award ceremonies such as the 'NRJ Music Awards' in France.

Big Bang also held their dome tour with over 100,000 fans. They also completed their world tour this past week with their Seoul concert.

TVXQ also held a record for the Japan Oricon by having their name rank number 1 on the charts for a total of 12 times.

By looking at the month of January, there seems to be much hope for another successful year for K-Pop.
