Eat Like A K-Pop Star: Slurp Down Banana Milk, Favorite Drink Of Taemin And Luhan

Welcome to this week's 'Eat Like a K-pop Star.' It's the weekly series where we showcase a delicious Korean specialty or something we've seen a K-pop star chowing down on lately and show you how to get or create some food of your own.

Want to slurp down a Korean beverage that's just as ubiquitous as soju but doesn't give you a hangover? Get yourself some banana ooyoo, or banana milk. The cool, sweet drink is as energizing as it is delicious and is a K-pop star favorite.

Banana-flavored milk got its start about 40 years ago when the Korean government started encouraging citizens to drink more milk. One company, Binggrae, thought that plain old milk needed a little flavor, and decided to add banana flavoring and a little sugar to regular milk. At the time, because of restrictions following the war, bananas were a relatively rare fruit, so the flavor was exciting and exotic for many Koreans.

In true Korean form, though, Binggrae made its product a blend of old and new. It sold the milk in a hexagonal container that was meant to mimic a hangari, or the clay pot traditionally used to store food. That's because at the time, many rural people were leaving their hometowns and headed for the city to look for work, and that hangari shape was designed to invoke pleasant memories of meals back in the country. Between the new, exotic flavor and the reminder of back home, banana milk easily became one of the most popular beverages in post-war Korea.

Now, it's a national favorite for everyone from schoolkids to grandmas and everyone in between. The hearty and refreshing drink is also perfect for performers that are constantly on the go and need a little pick-me-up during their tightly packed days.

Maybe that's why so many stars, including Kim Rae Won, SNSD, Taemin, Lee Min Ho, and Luhan have all appeared in commercials or promotional campaigns heralding the product.

Just this week, SECRET teased their new mini album with a little help from specially branded banana ooyoos.

Can't find your favorite banana milk at your local Asian market? Don't worry. The recipe for the drink is about as easy as making a bowl of cereal. You only need three ingredients: milk, sugar, and banana extract. Then follow this easy video to put it together.

The secret? Serve it super cold. Happy drinking!
