Review: Windy City Frontman Kim Ban Jang Brings Back The Best Of '90s Hip-Hop On 'No More Sad-Mistake' [AUDIO]

There is no shortage of hip-hop artists searching for success armed with the throwback sounds of the breakthrough rap to come out of New York City (or anywhere else in the US for that matter) in the early 1990s.

Yet, at the hands of Kim Ban Jang, best known as the frontman and drummer of the Korean reggae group Windy City, the textures of De La Soul or Tribe Called Quest are rekindled like a fresh flame with enough new spin to create something unique.

On Kim's new single "No More Sad-Mistake," released on Friday, the best minimalist production of that groundbreaking era is sprinkled with distinctly Korean styles and sounds. The vocal inflection of South Korean pop icon Cho Yong Pil, even some of the clowning around of hit-making joke rap band UV is mixed with the eclectic vocalist's reggae roots.

A song that on first listen may seem like a simply an effective hip-hop throwback, actually has quite a widely varied variety of ingredients bubbling below the surface.

The way Kim is able to keep his able to keep his genre-bending soulful and jazzy is reminiscent of another hip-hop act to rise to fame in the 1990s, Atlanta's most funkified rap duo, Outkast.

But all comparisons aside, at the heart of "No More Sad-Mistake" is a vocalist with enough skill to present a collage of sounds steeped in hip-hop's past, present and possible future. One example of an older sound put to effective use is the amazing scratching on "No More Sad-Mistake." Once as vital a part of hip-hop culture as graffiti and breakdancing, incredible all-vinyl DJ skills have become a similarly endangered with the advent

As with the other throwback sounds on "No More Sad-Mistake," it is great to hear an artist with enough knowledge of the history of hip-hop to know which sounds should be brought back to their rightful place in the front of the mix.
