Review: South Korea's Premier Female Hip-Hop Producer Shirosky Takes Her Sound To The Next Level On 'Last Flight' [AUDIO]

You may remember Shirosky from her 2014 release "Domino" or her KpopStarz interview from October.

The prolific South Korean hip-hop artist-producer has continued to refine her sound for the last five years and has never stopped exploring new sonic territory.

On her latest single "Last Flight," released on April 25 as part of a two-song EP (or "single album" as they are known in K-pop circles) entitled "The Way Home," Shirosky reveals the fruits of her labor, with a fresh, intricately layered beat that demonstrates her growth as an artist.

"Last Flight" opens with layers of percussion, a funky-but-mellow boom bap.

The four-on-the-floor backbeat sounds great, definitely striking the right tone. The kick drum is on the one like disco and it holds the tune together. The Fender Rhodes electric piano floats in with a melodic repetition, taking the listener up and away from the street groove, into a dream-like state. Shirosky plays the keyboard parts herself, so you can add studio musician and composer to her title of artist-producer.

Trombone and saxophone arrive, with a line that darts back and forth adding a polyrhythmic feel and dialing in a soulful atmosphere. Minimal vocals and synths round the song out.

Those are the basic ingredients of the song. That's all you need! I found myself moving my shoulders back and forth and swaying like the breeze. There's a lot of air in this track. It's nice.

Shirosky continues to evolve as a producer. Her beats seem to have grown more natural from even just a year ago. The way she has added incorporated horns on "Last Flight" horns really puts the jazz into her hip-hop. The beats are reminicent of A Tribe Called Quest, DJ Premier and other jazz-influenced hip hop producers of the 1990s.

The "Way Home" EP was released independently. I'm sure no record label can keep up with such a prolific artist. But as a listener, it's certainly worth taking the trip.
