SM Entertainment Turns Focus Of Artist Promotions From Japan To Chinese Market

China will be seenig more of EXO, TVXQ, and SHINee, if things go as planned for SM Entertainment in the second half of 2015.

Some of the most popular acts from South Korea's powerhouse entertainment agency SM Entertainment will change their focus to China, said a report in the K-Pop Herald. The report alleged that SM Entertainment's strategy for 2015 will lead the company away from focusing on the Japanese music audience, and instead focus on the larger Chinese market.

"SM recorded its highest-ever sales of 286,98 billion won ($257,822,832) last year, but business profits have continued to decline since 2012," said Jeong Hui Seok from the Korean financial analytics firm Korea Investment & Securities Co. "Since contracted K-pop groups like TVXQ, EXO and SHINee are doing well, SM is likely to increase surplus activities both in Korea and abroad."

Jeong claimed that SM Entertainment is expecting 350,000 Chinese fans to attend concerts held by SM Entertainment acts like EXO, SHINee, and Super Junior.

TVXQ's popularity in Japan previously led to much of the company's overseas profits, with over 650,000 fans attending six Japanese TVXQ concerts in 2015. However, TVXQ's leader U-KNOW Yunho will reportedly enlist in the Korean army by the end of 2015, after releasing a solo album in Japan, and Jeong claimed SM Entertainment will reduce profits in Japan in order to raise promotions and profits in China.

Currently, 70 percent of SM Entertainment's overseas profits comes from Japan.

The report said that SM Entertainment is planning a subsidary partner in China to more efficiently handle SM Entertainment business in the country. The Korean entertainment powerhouse has already set up small subsidary agencies to focus solely on the activities by f(x)'s Victoria and EXO's Lay.
