‘Reply 1988' Producers Defend Decision To Cast Girl’s Day’s Hyeri In Lead Role

Ever since Girl's Day member Hyeri was revealed to have been chosen as the main character for the upcoming tvN drama Reply 1988, the idol has been the target of harsh criticism that she lacked the acting chops to make the show a success.

But Reply 1988 producers have come out to defend Hyeri, giving her a strong vote of confidence in a public statement released on June 1, reports Koreaboo.

Hyeri faces doubts similar to those heaped on previous leading stars Go Ara and Eunji, the latter also a K-pop idol and member of girl group APink, but they expect Hyeri to show why she is worthy of the lead role in the highly anticipated third installment in the Reply drama franchise.

"We chose Hyeri in the first place is because she was best fit for the role and we firmly believe that she will be able to exceed expectations," The main characters for two other 'Reply' dramas, Go Ara and Eunji, both faced controversies when their castings were first announced. However, they were able to beat the controversy because of their acting, and we believe Hyeri will also do the same and turn this crisis into an opportunity."

Filming for Reply 1988 is scheduled to begin in the latter half of 2015. Hyeri has so far been keeping busy by posing as a tough athlete in Cosmopolitan magazine and recording cute summer collaboration songs with the rest of Girl's Day such as "Hello Bubble" for the haircare and cosmetics brand Mise en Scene.
