Eat Like A K-Pop Star: Be A Caprese Salad Chef Like Minzy

Welcome to this week's 'Eat Like a K-pop Star.' It's the weekly series where we showcase a delicious Korean specialty or something we've seen a K-pop star chowing down on lately and show you how to get or create some food of your own.

Mangia! It's Italian time. The Mediterranean peninsula is known for rich pasta and cheesy pizza, but today we're going with a lighter dish. The Caprese Salad uses three of Italy's most ubiquitous and delicious ingrediets - tomatos, mozzarella cheese, and basil - to create a light, refreshing appetizer or snack. It's also the dish that Minzy chose to make recently for her dad.

The 2NE1 star posted the photo to her Instagram recently. Her feed is typically more full of selfies and dance routines, but it seems the idol is trying out a new skill. She captioned the photo with #Minzychef, and apparently the end result was #seriouslysogood.

A caprese salad is not only super tasty, it's also the perfect dish for beginner cooks to prepare. It only uses a few simple ingredients, doesn't require any complicated baking or cooking, and allows a lot of room for error and experimentation.

There are three basic tenets. First, the tomato. Go with a vine-ripened variety and slice them about 1/4 inch thick. Do the same with a hunk of the freshest mozzarella ball you can find. (Buffalo mozzarella is an especially creamy and mouth-watering variety.) Stack 'em, lay 'em, arrange 'em however you want, and then stick a whole bunch of fresh basil leaves across the tomato and mozzarella, enough that you'll get a good hunk of basil in every bite.

But if you can't find any fresh basil leaves, or want something with a little more kick and juiciness, you could also drizzle a fresh pesto sauce over the tomatoes and mozzarella. Judging by her picture, it looks like this is the route Minzy took. Good pesto sauce is available in jars in almost all supermarkets. But if you've got a bunch of fresh basil and want to take the (slightly) harder but definitely fresher route, here's a great recipe from Laura in the Kitchen.

Polish off the salad with a drizzle of extra-virgin olive oil and a sprinkle of sea salt and black pepper across the top. A handful of fresh sprouts or arugula atop the salad is another way to make it both more flavorful and a little prettier.

It really is that easy! The only thing left to do is enjoy. Got a favorite caprese recipe or a suggestion for Minzy's next #Minzychef endeavor? Let us know in the comments!
