Oscar Pistorius' Release Date Nears Despite Conviction In Reeva Steenkamp's Killing; But Olympian's Ordeal Far From Over?

Oscar Pistorius' release date might come on August 21 according to the recommendation of the parole board, but his ordeal is not yet over.

The Blade Runner was sentenced to five years in prison in October last year for the death of Reeva Steenkamp. Instead of murder, the judge convicted him for culpable homicide. Under South African law, an inmate has to serve one-sixth of his sentence before he's liable for parole.

But Reeva Steenkamp's parents wrote a protest letter to the parole board regarding Oscar Pistorius' imminent release date.

A portion of the letter was published on CNN and it reads, "As her family, we do not seek to avenge her death and we do not want Mr. Pistorius to suffer; that will not bring her back to us. However a person found guilty of a crime must be held accountable for their actions."

"Statistics show that our society is under continuous attack from criminals and murderers. Incarceration of 10 months for taking a life is simply not enough. We fear that this will not send out the proper message and serve as the deterrent it should."

But Joan Smith's column for The Guardian said that Oscar Pistorius' looming release date doesn't come as a surprise.

"This turn of events, while hardly unexpected, speaks volumes about attitudes towards male violence in South Africa," she wrote. "That Pistorius could be released so soon also says a great deal about the capacity of celebrity to obliterate other narratives, even in a country where three women are killed each day by their husbands or boyfriends."

Oscar Pistorius will be placed under house arrest but that would not hamper his training, in light of the announcement by the International Paralympic Committee that his sentence doesn't preclude him from participating in the world Olympics.

"That context is very well-known to doctors and campaigners against domestic violence," she added. "So many women are killed by their husbands and boyfriends in South Africa that the crime is regarded by some commentators as amounting to femicide - the intentional murder of women simply because they are women."
