Review: EXO Forgo The Bombast Of 'Love Me Right' To Show Their Softer Side On 'Promise (EXO 2014)' [AUDIO]

The K-pop world may still be buzzing about EXO's last single "Love Me Right," released as one of four new songs on the June 3 repackage of the group's blockbuster album "EXODUS" of the same name, but for this reviewer, it is the final track on the "Love Me Right" repackage, "Promise (EXO 2014)," that steals the show.

While "Love Me Right" is a groovy song that will get everyone moving, it is "Promise (EXO 2014)" that will move souls with the heart-stirring vocals of the idol group.

Aside from being arguably one of the best songs EXO has ever released, "Promise (EXO 2014)"  is notable for being composed by several members of the group. Band member Lay wrote the music and lyrics were written by Chen and Chanyeol.

"Promise (EXO 2014)" builds slowly, beginning with deep piano notes before picking up into a series of irregular bass beats. EXO's core vocalists Baekhyun, Chen, Lay and D.O provide the backbone of the song's harmonies, which reach a climax in the chorus, before crashing down to near silence.

The song picks up again, only to be seamlessly interrupted by Chanyeol's most impressive solo rap to date.

With the intermingling of the member's voices, beats, piano notes and various strings, "Promise (EXO 2014)" has a lot going on. Yet the mix is artfully constructed to create something that showcases the raw emotion that EXO communicates through their music.

With a rising melody, strong harmonization from EXO's members and one or two surprises, "Promise" is a complex song that deserves multiple listens.
