J.K. Rowling Named Most Inspiring British Woman: Beats Out Victoria Beckham, Kate Middleton And Even The Queen

J.K. Rowling, the famous author of the Harry Potter book series, topped the Queen and Kate Middleton in a survey to name the Most Inspiring British Woman.

Rowling beat out the queen and the Duchess of Cambridge according to one voting group in Manchester. J.K. Rowling tied Olympic Track & Field Champion Jessica Ennis with 56 percent of Manchester residents finding them inspirational. The Queen won the vote of 2/5 of all-UK women voters, and Dame Hellen Mirren was third in the rankings.

BBC Woman's Hour editor Alice Feinstein reported on J.K. Rowling and the Inspirational Women List, saying, "The Power List is about more than just a series of names. We wanted to start a conversation about women and power."

The survey was conducted by Oxfam's Get Together fundraiser, which helps to celebrate International Women's Day on March 8 in the UK.

Also included on the list are British fashion icon Stella McCartney, Designer and Businesswoman Victoria Beckham, and British Vogue Editor-in-Chief Alexandra Shulman. Rowling is one of the few writers included in the ranking.

Manchester residents may have voted closer to home when choosing Rowling over Kate Middleton and the other members of the Royal Family. Among all British responders to the survey, J.K. Rowling came in third, with 39 percent of the voters finding her inspiring.

Oxfam community fundraising manager in Manchester Harriet Roberts told Mancurian Matter, "... it is clear that British women strongly value personal dedication and achievement, whether they are looking up to high profile figures or family members."

J.K. Rowling recently released a best-selling adult-fiction novel, The Casual Vacancy. She has said that in the future, she may write books revisiting the Harry Potter universe, although the series has ended.
