No Black Nurses Lawsuit in Michigan Hospital, Father Demands White Only Nurses

A Michigan hospital's lawsuit of "no black nurses lawsuit" Monday is causing a uproar.

African American nurse Tonya Battle is suing her employer the Hurley Medical Center for fulfilling a father's racist request last October of having only white nurses take care of his white baby.

While there is no official comment from the Hurley Medical Center in Flint regarding the racial discrimination lawsuit, a backlash has ensured over the allegations.

According to court documents, filed last month in Genesee Circuit Court, Battle learned that a note of the baby's chart stated, "No African-American nurse to take care of baby."

"I felt like I froze. I just was really dumbfounded. I couldn't believe that's why he was so angry (and) that's why he was requesting my charge nurse. I think my mouth hit the floor. It was really disbelief," Battle recalled of the matter.

The lawsuit states Battle was caring for a baby in the neo-natal unit in October when the baby's father asked to speak to a supervisor. And he demanded that for "no black nurses" treat his child then pulled up his sleeve revealing a tattoo that she believed was Nazi swastika.

Battle was later notified by her supervisor regarding the hospital's decision to honor the father's request and that she and other nurses were reassigned.

For a brief time, the hospital even had "no black nurses" sign on the infant's chart. However later hospital officials ordered the removal of the request on the chart and informed the father of their decision, after the facility's attorney advised against the decision.

The report states Battle wants "punitive damages."
