Promising High School Basketball Star Josh Level Dies On Court; Memorial Foundation Planned But Autopsy Results Remain Unclear

A young student and basketball player, Josh Level, collapsed during a basketball game on Tuesday night in North Carolina, and died soon after on the court. The reason for his death remains unknown, but plans for a memorial foundation have just been revealed.

The 17-year-old star for the New Garden Friends School's basketball team collapsed during a timeout break in the third quarter of a game. A nurse was on-hand to immediately attempt to aid Level, but he was never resuscitated.

Level was pronounced dead shortly after he was transported to a nearby medical center.

CEO of Winston-Salem's Quality Education Academy, where the basketball game and tragic event took place, told the News & Record, "We called 911 immediately, and a nurse gave him artificial respiration. We are saddened by what happened."

The Forsyth County Medical Examiner's Office told WFMY News 2 on Wednesday that there's "nothing obvious" in the autopsy that sheds light the sudden death.

New Garden Friends School, where Level was a student, released a statement about the tragedy to the News-Record early today, expressing heartfelt condolences to Level's family and friends. The announcement also revealed plans for a memorial foundation in Level's memory.

"The family plans to set up a foundation in memory of Josh," the school stated. Additional details regarding the memorial plan will be released as they become available.

Josh Level was one of North Carolina's most promising young basketball players.

Level had received scholarship offers from several respected basketball programs prior to his death, such as Oklahoma State and Charlotte, and was being recruited by Wake Forest and North Carolina Sate. He was considered one of the top prospects in North Carolina.

In an interview with the Wolfpacker's Jacey Zembal, Level had said that the desire to prove people who had overlooked him wrong motivated him.

"I've been kind of overlooked and I just want to prove people wrong. That is my motivation," Level told the Wolfpacker. "It's hard because I'm the middle child of seven, and it's hard to be away from family [at a boarding school]. You have to get it again. You have to do that in college, so I might as well start early."
