No. 1 Deadbeat Parent: NY Man Pleads Guilty Failing to Pay Child Support

New York man dubbed by prosecutors as government's "most wanted deadbeat" parent pleaded guilty Thursday for owing more than $1.2 million in child support.

Robert Sand, 50, who had married twice and had three children before disappearing for more than 10 years has received orders to pay child support since 1996 and arrest warrants had been issued for him in 2000, 2002, 2009 and 2010.

Investigator said Sand ran away for Florida and then Thailand, who had earned $500,000 to $600,000 in the early 1990s, then later underreported his income to evade child support payments.

He was caught trying to enter the Philippines without proper paperwork last November and was put on a plane to Los Angeles, arrested and sent to Islip, NY to face trial. The money he owes, including interest and penalties, comes about to $1.2 million.

Sand's attorney, Glenn Obedin said that his client had grown tired of living on the run and contacted authorities late last year.

"He had enough and wanted to come back and have the opportunity to make it right," Obedin told reporters after the court proceeding on Long Island.

"Neither court orders nor the familial bond meant anything to him as he fled to avoid his obligations," U.S. Attorney Loretta Lynch said in a statement.

The Department of Health and Human Services launched the nation's list of deadbeat parents in January 2012 which Sand had topped since the beginning. Following FBI's most wanted list, it features a mug shot of people implicated being deadbeats and information on their possible whereabouts.

"I want to be a good dad in the future," and doesn't expect sympathy from his ex-wives or anyone else according to the Daily News during a jailhouse interview after his arrest last year.

Sand pleaded guilty to two counts and faces up to four years in prison when he is sentenced in May.
