Vin Diesel posted two production stills for the upcoming third installment to the "Chronicles of Riddick" sci-fi film franchise on his Facebook page on Friday.

"It has been 9 years since the Chronicles of Riddick was released, Vin Diesel wrote. "All along, I knew I would eventually have to return to that dark place, the mind of an Alpha Furyan."

The revered science fiction epic that stars Van Diesel as an interstellar traveler includes 2000's "Pitch Black" and 2004's "The Chronicles of Riddick."

Simply titled "Riddick," the film will hit IMAX and theaters nationwide on September 6.

"Chronicles of Riddick" director David Twohy has returned for the project. In addition to Van Diesel of course, the film stars Karl Urban, Katee Sackhoff, Bokeem Woodbine, Dave Bautista, Jordi Molla and Matt Nable.

According to Entertainment Tonight, the film finds Riddick once again battling aliens, when he flags down two ships with an emergency beacon. One vessel is carrying a new breed of mercenaries, the other a man from his past.

With Van Diesel also co-producing the film, he is clearly excited to bring his intergalactic battles to the screen in "Riddick."
