Daytona Crash at Nationwide Race Injuries Driver, 28 Fans [VIDEO]

The multi-car crash occurred Saturday afternoon towards the end of NASCAR's Nationwide Race, that left at least 28 fans and one driver injured at the Daytona International Speedway. There have been no fatalities reported from the accident.

Kyle Larson's Chevrolet went flying into the fence that separates the track from spectators. Larson's car broke into pieces, including tires and a fiery engine.

Larson climbed out of his car unhurt, even after the front part sheared off, with a burning engine. Many of the debris landed in the grandstands, one of his tires appeared to fly over the fence and land midway up the lower section.

Daytona International Speedway president Joie Chitwood during a news conference nearly three hours later stated Sunday's main race would go on ahead despite the accident.

"First and foremost, our thoughts and prayers are with our race fans," Chitwood said.

"Following the incident, we responded appropriately according to our safety protocols and had emergency medical personnel at the incident immediately.

"We transported 14 people off property and 14 were treated at our on-track care center. We are in the process of repairing the facility, and we will be ready to go racing tomorrow," added Chitwood.

NASCAR's vice president of racing operations Steve O'Donnell said they would conduct an inspection of Larson's car and also evaluate the track's fencing.

"We're very confident that we'll be ready for the 55th running of the Daytona 500," O'Donnell said. "As with any of these incidents, we'll conduct a thorough review. We'll work closely with the tracks as we do for all our events. We'll learn what we can and see what we can apply in the future."
