79-Year-Old Shot Dead In Bushwick, Brooklyn: Elderly Man's 69-Year-Old Blind Wife Is Not A Suspect, Police Say

A 79-year-old man was found shot dead in his Bushwick, Brooklyn apartment early Sunday morning.

New York City police found James Jackson in his Gates Avenue apartment at 2:24 a.m. with a gunshot wound to the neck, the Daily News reports.

Jackson was taken to Woodhull Hospital, where he was declared dead by medical personnel.

The victim's 69-year-old wife called a neighbor late Saturday night when Jackson failed to respond to her calls from the bedroom, according to CBS.

"She said, 'Joyce could you come down here, I can't wake up Tyrone,'" the neighbor told CBS "He was laying in the couch in a puddle of blood."

Police say the victim's wife is not a suspect. According to the building's super, there were no signs of forced entry in the apartment.

"[Jackson's wife] wears a hearing aid, and when she goes to bed she don't have her hearing aid on," Joyce explained.

The 79-year-old's wife wonders how she can go on now that her husband is dead.

"What am I going to do now without him?" she asked a neighbor.

As of Sunday, no arrests had been made in connection with Jackson's death.

According to police, the 79-year-old allegedly was arrested nine times in his life, mostly in the 1990s, for drug charges and forgery.

Neighbor Eric Turner, 47, had knocked on Jackson's door Saturday night looking for a cigarette. He didn't get a response.

"He was a good person," Turner said. "If you needed something, he'd always give it to you."
