Jodi Arias Trial Update Today: Jodi Arias Ordered To Pay $30,000 to Travis Alexander’s Family; Jodi Arias Lawyer Says Convicted Killer Is Indigent

Jodi Arias Trial Update Today: Convicted killer Jodi Arias was ordered to pay compensation to Travis Alexander's family. Maricopa County Superior Court Judge Sherry Stephens awarded the $32,115.63 offered by the defense team. The money will be split among Alexander's five siblings.

Maricopa County Superior Court Judge Sherry Stephens ordered convicted murderer Jodi Arias to pay more than $32,000 in restitution to the family of Travis Alexander, the ex-boyfriend she shot and stabbed to death in 2008, according to court officials.

Prosecutor Juan Martinez said the Alexander family did not want to travel to take part in the hearing because they had suffered enough. An attorney for the Alexander family did make any official comment.

Alexander's family submitted receipts to document their expenses. The amount was ordered to help cover expenses incurred by five of victim Travis Alexander's siblings, making the ruling during a restitution hearing in Maricopa County Superior Court in Phoenix.

The family reportedly asked for nearly three times the amount they were awarded.

Arias attorney, Jennifer Willmott, says Arias is indigent.

"Victims are unlikely to get the money when somebody has been sent to prison for so long, because they don't have the ability to make it," Willmott told ABC News. "Eventually she'll be able to get a job making 10, 20 cents an hour, so they can take money from that, but it's very small."

Former waitress Arias was tried for stabbing her 30-year-old former lover nearly 30 times, slitting his throat almost from ear to ear and shooting him in the face. Arias said she acted in self-defense. Prosecutors said she killed him in a jealous rage.

She was convicted in May 2013 but two separate juries deadlocked on whether she should be put to death for the crime.

Arias, 34, was sentenced in April to life in prison without the possibility of parole for the murder of Alexander. Alexander was found slumped in a shower at his Phoenix-area home.

According to court records, Arias has appealed her conviction.
