Republicans Moving To Legalize Gay Marriage

Republicans and Gay marriage, usually when those two words are thrown together it is to discuss some Republican's latest comment on why gay marriage is wrong, but that is not the case this time.

Recently Republicans have taken a different stand on gay marriage. 75 members of the Republican Party have signed a legal brief that is being sent to the Supreme Court outlining why gay's and lesbians have a "constitutional right" allowing them to get married.

The Amicus Brief as it is called, is looking to get Proposition 8 revoked. Prop 8 was a ballot that banned gay-marriage in the state of California.

Many prominent Republicans who were once in support of Prop 8 have changed their opinions about gay-marriage.

Republican Jon Huntsman, the former Governor of Utah who once spoke out against gay marriage wrote a column for The American Conservative calling on other members of the Republican Party to embrace gay marriage.

"Conservatives should start to lead again and push their states to join the nine others that allow all their citizens to marry. I've been married for 29 years. My marriage has been the greatest joy of my life. There is nothing conservative about denying other Americans the ability to forge that same relationship with the person they love. "

He added, "All Americans should be treated equally by the law, whether they marry in a church, another religious institution, or a town hall... This is both the right thing to do and will better allow us to confront the real choice our country is facing."

Despite the fact that the right for gays to be allowed to marry had received a big push in a good direction it is still a work in progress to get the remaining 41 states to join the 9 that have already legalized gay marriage.

Just because some Republicans have decided to back gay marriage does not mean that everyone who ever opposed it will.

The Atlantic Wire reports, "Just yesterday, National Organization for Marriage announced on their website that they would "do everything in our power to defeat any Republican who votes in favor of same sex marriage."
