Honey Badger At NFL Combine; Tyrann Matheiu Attempts To Regain Trust He Lost

Honey Badger attempts to impress during the NFL scouting combine.

No. Not the animal. One of the most intriguing stories of this draft class is Tyrann Matheiu, who is known by his nickname, Honey Badger.

"I'm Tyrann right now but if the Honey Badger sticks, it sticks," the 5-foot-9, 186-pound cornerback with return ability said at the combine. "Right now I'm focused on being Tyrann Matheiu."

Matheiu was a Heisman Trophy finalist in 2011, but kicked off the LSU Tigers football team in 2012 for repeatedly violating the team's substance abuse policy. He never returned to the team.

Regardless of sitting out the 2012 season, the shutdown corner declared for the 2013 NFL draft and showed his skills at the NFL combine.

Trying to override his decision-making skills this past year, he wants the decision-making of NFL scouts to want to draft him either way.

He ran a an unofficial 4.43 in the 40-yard dash.

Teams will continue to get to know the person, rather the player they've watched on nationally televised games.

Honey Badger said he holds himself accountable for the mistakes he has made. He knows he would be hard to trust, but a chance is all he's looking for.

"First of all, I want them to be able to trust me," Mathieu said of what he needs to show coaches and scouts. "I'm not totally asking them to trust me right now, but what I am asking is for them to give me a chance. I've had a lot of time to reflect on it."

Matheiu violated his parole and was arrested when he was caught in October with marijuana.

"I thought my bottom was when I got kicked out of school, but when I got arrested in October, I found a new bottom," he told reporters.

Matheiu wants to help spread the word of what not to do to children.  This something he said he wants to never happen again.

"I know what it's like not to have football. I know what it's like not to be the center of attention. I know what it's like to be humiliated. To go back down that road -- not a chance in this world.

There's no telling where Honey Badger is going to in the 2013 NFL draft, but he took one small step at the scouting combine today.

"My best friend right now is honesty. I want to be as open as possible. I'm trying to rebuild my trust. I want those guys to hold me accountable."

The NFL  draft takes place on April 25.
