K-Pop News Weekly Top 3: Tao Prepares Solo Career, JYP Announces NewGirl Group, Girl's Day Apologize For Behavior

Every week in the Korean entertainment industry is filled with drama and new music. The week of July 5-July 11 saw new releases from top K-pop groups like Girls' Generation and Girl's Day, popular actor Lee Dong Gun confirm his relationship with T-ara's Jiyeon, and Big Bang's G-Dragon appear at a Chanel show.

But the top news stories revolved around a member of one of the top K-pop groups, a new act from one of Korea's top entertainment ocmpanies, and a situation where four of Korea's favorite girl group members were forced to apologize.

EXO's Tao Announces Solo Release In China

Months after Tao of K-pop group EXO went missing in action, the singer announced the news that he would be releasing music in China as a solo artist. On July 13, it is expected that Tao releases a solo single or album for the first time since debuting as a member of SM Entertainment's boy group EXO in 2012. SM Entertainment previously denied Tao's departure from EXO and said that the two parties were in talks regarding Tao's future within the K-pop world. The agency has not commented on Tao's announcement about his impending solo career.

JYP To Debut Twice By End Of 2015

Five years after miss A debuted in 2010, JYP Entertainment revealed the final lineup for its next girl group. The girl group Twice will contain nine members, all of whom had appeared the survival competition show "Sixteen." The sixteen trainees were initially competing for seven spots, but during the final episode JYP Entertainment's CEO, Park Jin Young, announced that two additional trainees would be joining Twice's official lineup. The company has said that Twice will debut by the end of the year.

Girl's Day Apologizes After Appearance on Afreeca TV

The four member K-pop girl group appeared on Afreeca TV's "Koon TV" twice this week after several of the members' poor behavior became an issue in South Korea. At least two of the members were accused of arrogance and rudeness towards the host Choi Goon, and a comment by member Sojin about eating dumplings (Mandoo in Korean,) became fodder for Korean netizens and journalists. Choi apologized for the incident, and Girl's Day came on the show later in the week to explain their actions and apologize.
