Wrestler Throws Medal in Garbage, Unhappy With Second Place

An Iowa senior wrestler unhappy with his second place throws medal in garbage at last weekend's Big Ten Championship tournament in Champaign, Illinois.

A local reporter from the University of Iowa was first to the medal in the garbage and tweeted a picture of it, resulting in an internet frenzy.

Senior Matt McDonough, a three-time All American wrestler placed second to Jesse Delgado of Illinois, it was his third loss of the season, "the most he has ever had."

McDonough upset after the loss, declined to speak after the match however according to The Gazette, the wrestler attempted to reclaim the medal before leaving Illinois.

"The fact that McDonough quickly sought a way to regain it shows that he understands the medal is important. Even if not to himself, it means something to the program," K.J. Pilcher wrote for The Gazette.

"It's not rocket science. We've got to be tougher. We've got to do certain things to be tougher... It starts with finishing and urgency in those situations," Iowa Hawkeyes' head coach Tom Brands told the Daily Iowan.

The Iowa Hawkeyes wresting program is famously successful with a long tradition of success winning 23 national championships since 1975.
