Big Bang, Wonder Girls Represent Idols As Hip-Hop Artists And Indie Bands Take Over Korean Music Charts

Are K-pop groups going out of style?

The summer of 2015 was filled with intense competition from many idol groups, but August has seen different types of musicians flood the Korean music charts. Artists such as Simon Dominic (Supreme Team's Simon D,) Primary, Hyukoh, and Zion.T took up many of the top ten spots on Korean music charts by the middle of August, as Korea witnesses a hip-hop and indie revival.

As for idols, Wonder Girls and Big Bang alone appeared on the majority of Korean music charts as of August 13.

According to the Instiz realtime iChart, the top ten songs in South Korea on August 14 were Simon Dominic's "Simon Dominic," Big Bang's "Let's Not Fall In Love," Primary's "Rubber" featuring Oh Hyuk of Hyukoh, "Zutter" by G-Dragon and T.O.P of Big Bang, and Wonder Girls' "I Feel You."

Songs by Hyukoh, Zion.T, Primary, and a song featuring Zico, Ja Mezz, and Andup from the competition show "Show Me The Money" filled the rest of the top ten.

South Korea has seen a shift in popularity towards hip-hop music, reflected in the popularity of competition shows such as "Show Me The Money" and "Unpretty Rapstar" and the the success of hip-hop acts on Korean music charts.

Indie music is underrepresented in South Korea, but Hyukoh's rise in music charts and appearances on "Infinite Challenge" have opened up the music scene; the band recently signed with YG Entertainment's indie sub-label HIGHGRND, run by Epik High's Tablo.

Idol music, sung by boy bands and girl groups, remains the largest genre of music in South Korea. Both Wonder Girls and Big Bang are considered to be two of the most iconic musical acts in South Korea today.
