Roland Martin Leaves CNN After 5 Years As Political Contributor, Says New Boss Jeff Zucker “Wants His Own Peeps”

Longtime contributor Roland Martin will leave CNN on April 6 of this year. Roland Martin confirmed his plans to leave CNN in a tweet he posted to his followers.

"Last day at @CNN is April 6," CNN contributor Roland Martin tweeted on Tuesday morning.

Roland Martin tweeted a response to a Twitter user's question as to why he was leaving, saying, "new boss wants his own peeps."

Jeff Zucker, the 'new boss,' was brought on last year to make the network more popular.

The new president of CNN Worldwide, Jeff Zucker, reportedly wants his own people to contribute to the network, as opposed to people who are settled in CNN.

Martin emailed Politico a letter about his departure, explaining that he will leave the network at the end of the two-month extension granted to his contract in February.

He wrote, "I have thoroughly enjoyed my little over six years [at CNN]. There are many folks I will miss dearly, especially wonderful colleagues like Josanne Lopez, Soledad O'Brien, Ali Velshi, and so many bookers and producer.

"But I also miss the folks I tried to speak for and represent the most when I was on the air: the men and women who worked on the crew; the security guards; and even the janitorial workers. Those were the people I most spoke for; those were the people who would cheer me on as I walked down the streets, in the grocery store, and at airports."

Martin is the latest in a string of contributors the network has let go, including Bill Bennett, James Carville and Mary Matalin.

Martin has been with CNN since 2007, but his departure didn't come as a surprise.

Martin was suspended last year for what CNN called "regrettable and offensive" tweets seen as homophobic by the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation, according to Deadline.

Martin sent out the offensive tweet during last year's Super Bowl, writing, "If a dude at your Super Bowl party is hyped about David Beckham's H&M underwear ad, smash the is out of him!"

Since President Obama was elected, Roland Martin, a political contributor, hasn't been frequently seen on the network.

Martin won't be out of work completely when he leaves CNN; he still hosts Washington Watch, a show seen online and on the TV One network.

CNN is premiering several new shows this spring. On Monday, CNN launched its first new show under Zucker's regime: Jake Tapper's The Lead. It is a news program that highlights fast-breaking news while incorporating in-depth newsmagazine topics.

In early April, Anthony Bourdain will premier his new travel show on CNN.
