Artists From 11 Countries To Perform At Upcoming World Music Festival In Gwangju, South Korea

An eclectic line-up of artists from 11 countries will converge in South Korea on August 29 and 30 for the sixth annual Gwangju World Music Festival.

The two-day international festival will be held at the national Asian Culture Complex in the provincial city of Gwangju and will bring together "contemporary reinterpretations" of the representative countries' ethnic music, reports The Korea Herald.

For South Korea, performers will include singer JK Kim Dongwook and jazz project group "Zebra band," traditional music and jazz hybrid band The NEQ, South Korean-Japanese duo Hachi & TJ, and indie band Sultan of the Disco, which will close the festival.

Foreign artists performing on the first day on August 29 include singer Bachar Mar Kalife (French-Lebanese), the BKO Quintet (Mali), rapper La Dame Blanche (Cuba), and South American DJ El Hijo de la Cumbia.

The second day on August 30 will showcase performances from the band Eran Zamir Quintet (Israel), electric musician Dawanggang (China), and band Kalascima (Italy),

Festival admission is free.

"World music, such as bossa nova of Brazil and Tango of Argentina, embodies each country's ways of living and culture just like each tribe's or country's folk music," said Bang Sun Gyu, the acting chief of the complex in which the festival will be held.

"Starting with the world music festival, we're going to continue to drum up the festive mood with various events ahead of the complex's official opening ceremony," the chief added.

The festival is one of the events that will be held to celebrate the launch of The Asian Culture Complex, designed to be a multipurpose cultural facility, which will be completed by year's end and will look to support Asian artists.
