K-Pop Double Take is a weekly review column highlighting recent releases that have yet to receive the attention we feel they deserve.

Classic West Coast hip-hop sounds continue to seep into Korea's booming underground hip-hop scene.

Though Giriboy's "Like As Fixed" featuring C-Jamm and Black Nut, from the album "Sexual Perceptions," failed to break through to the mainstream when it was released back in March, it is part of a growing wave of South Korean rap acts (like Ja Mezz or Kirin) channeling California hip-hop icons like N.W.A and its individual members' solo work, and the nasty funk bands, like Zapp and Parliament Funkadelic, that influenced them.

For anyone who has observed the Korean rap scene in recent years and has just about had it with drum machines spewing out high-speed hi-hat in an obvious nod to Southern rap acts like Lil' Wayne or Ludacris, this is excellent news.

But Giriboy doesn't seem tied to trends. Not only is the drumbeat not a traditional hip-hop feel, it is not what many fans would envision as a hip-hop beat. But hey, that never stopped Kanye West. On "Like As Fixed," Giriboy creates an original mix of well-executed synthesizers and guitar parts over what appears to be a live band.

But it's not just a gimmick.

Jamming with a burning band (or at least providing a very convincing illusion of an organic session), the 24-year-old musician and producer lays a solid foundation for C-Jamm and Black Nut to do their thing.

For any Western rap fan that feels like they have little use for any rapper's music that isn't in English, Giriboy and company offer a strong, two-point rebuttal. One, the music, not a sample but a well-composed song, is something unique, appealing and new. Two, you don't have to know the meaning of the words to know there is plenty of heavy talent on the mic on "Like As Fixed."

All you have to do is open your mind.
