Rob Thomas dropped two bombshells on Wednesday. The Matchbox 20 frontman revealed he's got a new album and the band might be doing something special next year.

In an interview with The Daily Telegraph, Thomas he worked with the likes of One Republic's Ryan Tedder and Ricky Reed in the hope to produce a new sound.

"I want to work with someone that looks at pop music in a way that I can't, because that's the only way I'm going to learn. I always want to do something different," he explained.

Early reviews for "The Great Unknown" though were mixed. Herald Sun described it as a compilation of "Rob reboots" but also compliments it as "polished." Boston Globe, meanwhile, said the new tunes remains loyal to Thomas' trademark sound but recognized how his vocals have gone even better.

Even though the album just dropped, Thomas was already teasing about his plans if he followed up this new album.

"I've already started thinking and writing and it's going in a whole other direction," he promised. "It's time for my David Gray/Ryan Adams folkie/acousticy record that I've always had in me but I haven't really made yet."

But while Rob Thomas was moving forward with his music, he does not forget his roots from Matchbox 20. He even revealed that the band may get together next year in time for the 20th anniversary of their first album -- "Yourself or Someone Like You."

"We're going to reissue the record - we'd like to remix it because we just don't like the way it sounds," he said as quoted by The Music.

"We'd love to do a couple of shows playing it all the way through because there's some songs on there we haven't played in 15 years," he added about the possible reunion. "It's very much in our mind, we're just trying to figure out the best way to handle it."
