Roy Kim Discusses College Life And His Rise To K-Pop Stardom During KCON LA [EXCLUSIVE]

Solo vocalist Roy Kim balances his career as a K-pop star with a hectic class schedule at Georgetown University in Washington, D.C. While his attendance at the college was known by many K-pop fans, his identity as a student was fully revealed through an April 2015 article published by the Washington Post. He recently performed at KCON 2015 in Los Angeles, where he delivered a compelling solo performance that served as a counterbalance to the myriad of bombastic idol group stages. 

During his stirring KCON set, he performed his hit "Spring Spring Spring." He captured the attention of the audience with his cover of the Jason Mraz pop-rock ditty, "Lucky," which he delivered as a duet with Soyou of Sistar. 

Kim is familiar with developing unique performances. In 2012, he emerged as the champion of Superstar K4, where he competed against Jung Joon Young and the Hongdae-based rock group, He defeated his competition with his complex vocals and the strength of his songwriting skills with folk rock tracks like "Passing By." His nine-track debut studio album, "Love Love Love" yielded the hit title song and "Spring Spring Spring." "Love Love Love" led the solo vocalist to receive Best New Male Artist honors at the 2013 Mnet Asian Music Awards. He was also the recipient of the New Rising Star award at the 2014 Golden Disk Awards.

In 2014, honored his fans through his follow-up album, "Home." The success of "Home" led to his first K-Drama original soundtrack contribution, the title track for the hit SBS series, "Pinocchio." The hit song attracted the attention of drama viewers, who enjoyed his cameo appearance in the weekend series, "Producer."

Audiences are KCON were provided with several opportunities to see Kim. He generated buzz within the Los Angeles Convention Center when he walked through the convention floor. As the ambassador of the Girls' Education campaign, he provided fans with the opportunity to see his charitable side, as he encouraged donations for the organization. He was one of several stars who provided fan engagement opportunities and he also delivered a strong performance on the convention center stage. 

KpopStarz sat down with Roy Kim, during the soundcheck sessions at KCON. In his video interview, he discussed the challenges of balancing his career in K-pop and his life as a student at Georgetown University.
