Friends Reunion 2015: ‘Ridiculous’ $1 Million Per Episode Deal Debated By Show Creator And Matt LeBlanc As Friends Reunion Rumors Won’t Go Away

Friends Reunion 2015: The co-creator of "Friends" called the stars $1 million per episode deal "ridiculous," recently, but Matt LeBlanc does not agree.

"Friends" ended its run in May 2004 but lives on in syndication. By the end of NBC's run, "Friends" was averaging 25 million viewers each week. The cast members negotiated a deal for $1 million per episode.

"A million dollars an episode is kinda ridiculous,"Marta Kauffman, one of the "Friends" co-creators, who is now the showrunner of Netflix's "Grace and Frankie," told the Television Critics Association Summer Press Tour on Tuesday  Kaufmann said.

"Let's be honest, that's a lot of money. I think it's inflated. And there's something unrealistic about it. Not everybody is going to get a million dollars an episode. So I think actually what we're all doing [at Netflix] is actually more reasonable and makes more sense."

The cast doesn't feel that way.

"I've been asked this question before, but phrased as, do I think we were worth it? Were we worth $1 million? To me, that's such a strange question," Matt LeBlanc, who played Joey, told the Huffington Post Live in January.

"It's like, well, that's irrelevant. Are you worth it? How do you put a price on how funny something is? We were in a position to get it. If you're in a position in any job, no matter what the job is -- if you're driving a milk truck or installing TVs or an upholsterer for a couch -- if you're in a position to get a raise and you don't get it, you're stupid. You know what I mean? We were in a position and we were able to pull it off. 'Worth it' has nothing to do with it."

Kauffman said Netflix produces 13 episodes or less per season because of unrealistic demands of shooting traditional sitcoms like "Friends."

"When you do 24 episodes for a network, you know, that's your whole year. You don't have time to do other stuff," Kauffman said.

"When an actor is doing 13 episodes, they have many, many, many weeks left. They can pursue movies and theater and other stuff."

"Friends" co-creator Marta Kauffman recently denied reports of a reunion.

"'Friends' is about that time in your life when your friends are your family," Kaufman told Entertainment Weekly.

"Once you start having a family, that changes. And you have new groups. It's not that you don't love those people anymore, but it changes. But to put them back together now when it's no longer that time of their lives, there's no reason for the show. That's all the show was about -- that time and those relationships."
