Say Goodbye To Instagram’s Square Sized Photos In Latest App Update

We all know the struggle: you took a great photo, but it won't fit in Instagram's obligatory square size format, so you have to upload your photo into a different app to add a white border so that your shoes make it in the #ootd snap. Now the struggle is no longer: Instagram is getting rid of its compulsory square crop in the app's latest update.

According to Buzzfeed, Instagram's update rolls out around the world on Android and iOS apps today.

Now, Instagrammers can upload portrait and landscape photos or videos directly to Instagram. In the new format you just choose a photo from your gallery and tap the new button on the bottom left.

You can then pinch and zoom to change the aspect ratio of the photo.

Say goodbye to those thick white borders we all succumbed to in order to get the whole gang in one Instagram photo.

However, square crop will still be the default mode

"Square format has been and always will be part of who we are," the company said in its announcement.

Some people on the interwebs are complaining that the update isn't available just yet. Hang tight - we're sure it'll be up and running before you know it.

What prompted the change? According to CNET, the company said they noticed that nearly one out of every five photos or videos posted to the social media app are not in the square format. Instead, they often have white or black black borders or they are awkwardly cropped.
