Stabbings At Target In Pittsburgh, PA Hurt Six People; Teenage Girl In Critical Condition

A stabbing at Target in Pittsburgh, PA hurt six people, including a 16-year-old female who was cut in the back and arm and was hospitalized. She remains in serious condition.

Pittsburgh police told the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette said that the stabbings at Target began around 5:30 PM, when the suspect allegedly cut another man’s face at the intersection of Penn Avenue and Penn Circle. He then ran inside the nearby Target store.

Diane Richard, the police department’s spokeswoman, said that store security told police and two men followed the knife-wielding man into the store, but the man chased one of them out of a restroom and ran towards the checkout lanes. He then grabbed a 16-year-old female standing with family members and held her in front of him with the knife still in his hand.

An eyewitness said, “it looked like he was holding her hostage.” Richard confirmed earlier reports that the girl was cut in the back and arm and is now at the Children’s Hospital admitted and was in serious condition and later upgraded to critical condition.

Another victim, a man, was cut on the lip, and another sustained deep cuts to his fingers. A bystander was also taken to the hospital for chest pain.

Officers used a stun gun and pepper spray to subdue the attacker. He was being treated prior to being taken to the Allegheny County Jail. The latest from the police is that charges were pending.

An officer involved in the operations was treated for pepper spray.

According to Richard, “None of the injuries reported appeared to be life threatening.”

The police or media had not released names of the victims and the suspect.

CBS affiliate, KDKA-TV, reported the suspect was armed with a long kitchen knife. The TV station also said that six people were injured, four of whom suffered knife wounds.

Chris Jones, an eyewitness who was in the store when the incident happened told KDKA-TV that he saw the suspect being beaten.

"He was getting his tail whooped with a bat, with fists," according to Jones. "He was getting tore up and I think he deserved it."

In a statement, Target said that "the safety and security of our guests and team members is a top priority for Target and we are partnering closely with local law enforcement."
