2NE1's CL Under Fire For Comments About Asian Women In Paper Magazine Interview

2NE1's CL was already turning heads when it was announced that she would appear on one of Paper Magazine's September "Luxe in Flux" covers, alongside her designer and friend Jeremy Scott. However, with the magazine now in circulation, it seems as though her words are gaining far more attention and criticism.

In her interview with the New York-based magazine, released August 31, CL was asked about Korea as a major force in luxury. To this she answered, "I think a lot of the young kids right now are looking for something new, and they want to look different." She places her focus on young girls, explaining that she wants to set an example as an Asian girl for other girls.

"Girls in Asia are very obedient, shy, timid, quiet, but I can tell that it's changing," she said. "I want them to be stronger and tell them that it's OK to be different. A lot of Asian girls love being basic because it's safe. But the thing is, a lot of my fans are those girls, and they want to be bolder, but there's no one they could look up to." She further explains that she feels she has changed a lot of girls in Asia already but there is no one in the United States who can do the same job.

As the interview was translated and shared across various Korean news outlets CL quickly came under fire from online commenters in her native South Korea for her comments about Asian girls. "That's quite arrogant of her to say. In our society, that's something normally said by someone with much more wisdom and experience," one Korean user commented, as translated by Netizenbuzz.

"She talks like she's the icon of this generation or something when she's nothing but a member of an idol group. Having confidence is good but she's reaching arrogant levels," another added.

Many others condemned CL saying that she was perpetuating an untrue stereotype in the west of Asian women being quiet and obedient. "The idea that Asian women are obedient is one that came from western ideals and here she is confirming their beliefs. And I don't know why CL thinks that's something she needs to change about our women who are like that," one other user criticized.

Some of the comments also went as far as to ask CL to remain in America and not return to her home in Korea. On the other hand, however, some commenters agreed with what she said and even claimed there might be a translation problem between the original English interview and the Korean reports.
