CNN Introduces Moranbong, The North Korean K-Propoganda Band

Lee Soo Man and Yang Hyun Suk are two of the most iconic music producers on the Korean peninsula. Now CNN reports that we can add one more person to this list, North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un.

CNN, the US-based news agency, introduced the North Korean pop act Moranbong to the international world on Thursday. The report, made by reporter Kyung Lah, highlighted Kim's role in the creation of the girl group.

North Korea is one of the most closed-off countries in the world, and even pop music is used as a tool by the government, according to CNN.

Moranbong was formed in 2012, allegedly by Kim, and promotes the propaganda of North Korea via their song's lyrics and videos playing in the background.

Some of Moranbong's lyrics that were highlighted by CNN include, "How can he be so kind? His smile is so warm and sweet. I have no choice but to be taken by him and his warm heart."

Videos playing in the background of a performance from 2013 includes a missile launch towards the United States and multiple appearances by Kim.

While Moranbong is a girl group made up of twenty somethings, videos of their performances on YouTube feature few vocal parts and instead focus on their dancing and skills as musicians, with violins and synthesizers playing a prominent role in their music.

The CNN feature comes days after reports of K-pop songs by the likes of IU, Girls' Generation and Big Bang being directed as propaganda from South Korea towards North Korea during a heightening of tension between the two countries.

North and South Korea have been at war since the start of the Korean War in 1950. The two countries signed an armistice in 1953, but are still technically at war.
