One look at brother-sister duo Akdong Musician and it is obvious that they are very different from the other acts in the K-Pop genre. They have risen to fame in the last couple months while participating in the second season of the singing competition reality show Kpop Star for their catchy original songs and sweet, bubbly personalities.

Despite their young ages (at 16 Lee Chan Hyuk is three years his sister Lee Soo Hyun's senior), the songs they have written are complex and creative and their arrangements of cover songs are energetic and supremely interesting.

Just check out this comparison of SHINee's “Ring Ding Dong” and the Akdong Musician version. A powerful and fun song in its own right, but the amateur singers put their own spin on it making it uniquely theirs.

Young, with a soulful voice, Lee Soo Hyun is reminiscent of season 1 runner-up, Lee Hi. And as a pair, Akdong Musician has certain qualities that makes us remember Jang Jae-in and Kim Ji Soo performing their cover of “Cinderella” on SuperStarK2.

Akdong Musician appeared alongside the other season 2 finalists on SBS Power FM's Cultwo Show earlier this week to discuss the upcoming final episode. When asked about the duo's chart-topping originals Lee Chan Hyuk said they have composed more than 50 songs, and he is still working on more. Compared to the other contestants on KPopStar, Akdong Musician are the only ones who have been performing their own songs on the program - a distinction that has gotten them a tremendous amout of praise from the audience and judges. Most recently the song "Crescendo" shot to the top of music charts around Korea.

Akdong Musician are a breath of fresh air in the K-Pop scene where things are becoming overly commercialized and sex sells. Even if the sibling duo doesn't win next week's KpopStar finale, it is certain they aren't going anywhere. The prolific youngsters are sure to continue writing and performing more hits for fans and are likely to have a long career ahead of themselves.
