Fantasy K-Pop Collab: Lee Hi + Florence And The Machine

Lee Hi, the fresh-faced 'Monster Rookie' of YG Entertainment may be young, but she has some major pipes. She sings with the passion and conviction of someone twice her age with a soulful voice that seems like it belongs in a different generation.

The 16-year-old singer has been receiving critical acclaim since her debut last year, her singles have been incredibly popular, and she has already worked with some of the biggest names in the Korean music industry. Part of Lee Hi's appeal is that she presents something very original in her music - not just her jazzy alto toned voice, but her arrangements and charisma as well. It makes it hard to believe she can't even drive yet.

Lee Hi has already collaborated with many of her YG label-mates such as Epik High and G-Dragon of Big Bang with great success. This is a girl with a special gift and a lot to offer the global music industry - sure she is inexperienced, but why not hit the ground running?

It would be tremendous to see Lee Hi on stage alongside other powerful female vocalists. She has the ability to offer some depth and youthful appeal and would probably learn a thing or two from her older counterparts. That is why this week Fantasy K-Pop Collab has put Lee Hi together with English indie-rock group Florence + The Machine.

Ten years Lee Hi's senior, Florence Welch is the lead singer and songwriter behind the famed indie group. Isabella Summers, keyboardist and producer for the group, makes up the other half along with a host of different musicians who come together and collaborate to form "the Machine."

Florence and the Machine's style has been referred to as neo-soul (because of Welch's vocal stylings) and baroque pop (due to Summers's arrangements) and they are highly theatrical when performing live.

For our comparison, let's look at the break-out singles from both; Lee Hi's "1,2,3,4" and Florence + The Machine's "Dog Days Are Over."

After originally being recognized as a contestant on K-Pop Star, and coming in second place, Lee Hi was added as a member of a girl group known as the SuPearls. Before the group was set to officially debut, the singer released her own single and it was an instant success. "1,2,3,4" was released on October 28 and shot to No. 1 on all of the main music charts in South Korea where it stayed for three weeks. The SuPearls disbanded earlier this year and Lee Hi officially debuted as a solo artist.

While Florence + The Machine had already been getting a lot of attention from critics and industry professionals, "Dog Days Are Over" put them on the map, so to speak. The single was released in late 2008 and made its way into the top 30 in the UK, Ireland, US, and Canada. "Dog Days Are Over" helped Florence + The Machine get to the Grammys, where they were nominated for Best New Artist in 2011.

Both Florence Welch and Lee Hi have distinctive bluesy voices, but in very different ways. The Korean singer has a more under-toned, soulful sound and her British contemporary has an anthem-belting power soul quality to her voice.

The two women are also good at bridging that divide between this jazzy sound and the fun, catchy beats of modern pop music - blending them together almost effortlessly.

If Lee Hi wants to make a name for herself in the international market, the way Florence + The Machine has, she should exploit the uniqueness and versatility of her voice as much as possible. She already has been doing a good job of making herself stand out, and at 16, she really is just in the beginning of her career. Lee Hi has the opportunity to explore her craft, take in new elements, and learn from some of the best musicians of our time.

A collaboration with Florence + The Machine may just be the right way to go about it. Such a collaboration would probably want to play up the neo-soul sounds incorporated by both singers. Perhaps a new take on an old favorite, such as a Nina Simone cover - or even a fresh version of a more recent popular hit, like an Amy Winehouse cover.

Already getting a lot of praise for her Korean collaborations, why not have the talented, young Lee Hi branch out and get her bearings in the global music scene with an international collaboration with Florence + The Machine?
