Review: 24K Unleash The Fury On Their Hard-Hitting New Single 'Super Fly' [AUDIO]

There may be an almost exponential increase in the number of K-pop boy bands each year, but with good promotion and a bit of luck it's still possible for a relatively unknown group to make an impact if they bring something new to the table.

Enter 24K.

Though the six-member South Korean boy band has been releasing albums since 2012, but it is the group's latest single "Super Fly," the title track of the new 24K EP released on Thursday, that is a warning shot across the bow of the entire Hallyu industry, demanding the immediate attention of any true fan.

Are there other high-energy acts in K-pop? Of course there are. Though there is something so fresh about the raw, unprocessed emotion the 24K members are laying down on the mic. They seem to have taken things to a new place.

Musically, "Super Fly" is every bit as earthshaking, combining New Orleans bounce, early rap and the same '90s techno breaks that Psy rode to international notoriety to back up the dialed-up intensity.

Unlike the original "Super Fly," Curtis Mayfield's seminal contribution to the 1972 blaxploitation film of the same name and Missy "Misdemeanor" Elliott's 1997 answer "The Rain (Supa Dupa Fly)," 24K's Super Fly is not chill. It's the opposite of chill.

The performances are about as hard-edged as K-pop gets. These guys are clearly not fooling around. And though the lyrics and video riff a bit on high school nerds, the members of 24K surely know how it feels to be outsiders.

Despite chart numbers to the contrary, "Super Fly" is one of the heaviest things dropping in K-pop right now and this isn't music being made by the popular kids.
