SNL Korea Angers Girls' Generation Fans By Burning Group's Albums And Photos

SNL Korea stirred up controversy after members of the sketch comedy program burned and stepped on images and albums of Girls' Generation as part of an episode which aired over the weekend.

The Oct. 10 episode tried to squeeze out some laughs from the rivalry between the K-Pop girl group Wonder Girls, who served as hosts for the episode, and Girls' Generation, reports Allkpop.

In doing so, SNL Korea created a sketch titled 'The 5th Army President' where the Wonder Girls played military generals that took to power due to their popularity among soldiers. SNL actors were then shown burning and stepping on photos and albums of Girls' Generation, who were viewed as threats under the fictional Wonder Girls military regime.

You can watch the controversial part around the 10-minute mark:

Fans were naturally upset over the disrespect shown towards Girls' Generation, even if the sketch was meant to be a joke.

In response to the fan outrage, SNL Korea has issued an official apology to Girls' Generation, their fans and their agency.

"We would like to address the scene involving Girls' Generation that aired during the 'The 5th Army President' digital skit of yesterday's episode hosted by Wonder Girls," the show's statement began. "While trying to illustrate Wonder Girls' history in a drama format, we couldn't avoid mentioning the most popular group Girls' Generation. We apologize for making Girls' Generation fans uncomfortable and we will make sure to be more attentive in the future."

"The controversial scene is to be either deleted or revised during reruns of the episode," the show added. "We apologize again to Girls' Generation, their fans, and SM Entertainment."
