‘Central’ Figures in Idol Groups?

Since idol groups have gained much popularity there was always unfounded rumors of having certain ‘ranks’ among the members. However a report by OSEN stated, idol groups do have these ‘central’ roles and now working to get rid of the practice.

Hwang Jung Eum singer-turned-actress revealed the reason why she left the idol group Sugar and mentioned the word ‘center.’ The term is used and given to the main member of the group. Different from the group’s leader, who communicates the most with the group members and the management, the ‘center’ is the member who most actively promotes and first come to mind when the group is mentioned.

The idol group had set a central figure until early to mid-2000s. The ‘central’ member would be selected from the label based on the most popular member of the group. That member then will be the center of all promotional activities, receiving the most spotlights.

Obviously this would put the ‘central’ member to receive the most attention. Then instances of being cast on a show, the producers would demand the ‘central’ member to be present. There are also instances when an unexpected member would rise up to stardom, which will then take away the original ‘central’ member’s place.

Which will cause uncomfortable situations that will bring tension between the group members and eventually lead to the group’s split. This is the exact reason why idol groups have recently tried to get rid of this ‘central’ strategy. Now a days the groups have rotated middle position now and casting of dramas or variety shows are being equally spread out.

An industry expert commented, “In the past, some groups saw huge discrepancies between the member’s appearance fees. If the ‘central’ figure moved to another label, then it would be over that group. If you focus on one single member, then in the short run it might bring you more money now; however the group as a whole won’t last too long. For the group to have a long career, it’s important to raise each member equally.”

“If only a single, ‘central’ member is publicized then fans easily lose interest in the group as a whole. Now days we are able to see how every group member possess outstanding musical skills and good looks. Therefore it is important to focus on each member’s unique personalities and raise their popularities,” the expert added.
