Indictments Made In French Court For Topless Kate Middleton Photos, Publisher And Photographer Charged With ‘Invasion Of Privacy’

Two indictments have been made in a French court for the release of the now infamous topless Kate Middleton photos, the AFP reports. This came after earlier reports that charges will be filed against individuals responsible for releasing the images.

Closer, the first media outlet to release the controversial images, has been under criminal investigation since September for the release of the topless Kate Middleton photos. The AFP now reports that two players responsible for releasing the photos, Ernesto Mauri, Chief Execute of Mondadori France and a photographer of La Provence, a regional newspaper, have been indicted.

The controversial and “indecent”, according to many critics, topless Kate Middleton photos was believed to have been snapped with a long lens camera. It depicted Prince William and the Princess Kate Middleton sunbathing while on holiday in the south of France. Soon after their release, St. James’ Palace released a statement and sought damages from Closer after the pictures were published. The royal office was able to halt further publication of the images in France.

Mauri is charged with “invasion of privacy” while the name of the paparazzi who snapped the images is yet to be released. Photographer Valerie Suau has been charged for photos of the duchess in her swimsuit, which also ran in the newspaper media.

The French court in Nanterre will reach a decision on the 5th of June, but the final result of it would have little impact to Closer, according to Metro France, since the tabloid has not effectively complied with the court’s previous rulings. The lawsuit also does not encompass other international titles that published the topless Kate Middleton photos like Italy’s Chi, Ireland’s Daily Star and Denmark’s Se og Hør. British publications agreed not to publish the photos, including the U.K. edition of Closer.
