The legendary Chanel designer Karl Lagerfeld reveals his age. It has long been a mystery to the fashion world and everyone who admired the revered icon, but now everybody knows that he’s 77-years-old.

In an interview with Paris Match, the white-haired Chanel creative director stated that his real birthdate is September 10, 1935. And he claimed that for decades, he had no idea when he was born.

It was only when his mother died that he discovered that he was born 1935 and not 1938 as stated on the documentation. Lagerfeld said, “She changed the year. It was easier to make 3 or an 8…I don’t know why she did it.”

The famed photographer and designer, who grew up in Hamburg, Germany, but has been living in Paris for decades, is known to be very careful in building and crafting his public image.

Karl Lagerfeld original name was Lagerfeldt, but he later changed it to Lagerfeld to make it sound more commercial.

Like one of his friends, Anna Wintour, Lagerfeld likes to keep a standard uniform when doing public appearances. He is known to wear dark sunglasses, high-collared white shirt, and fingerless leather gloves when he goes out.

Karl Lagerfeld started his career in Paris as a teenager after entering a design competition and landing a job with Pierre Balmain. Today he leads the design team at both Chanel and Fendi with his own eponymous clothing label.

Aside from being a fashion designer and fashion photographer, Karl Lagerfeld’s workmanship as a creative director is recognized and praised beyond the industry he has worked in for decades. He was, for a year, given the title of creative director for the Diet Coke brand.

Karl Lagerfeld is also good friends with another fashion icon, Valentino, whom he met in Paris while the two were working as fashion assistants.
Despite Lagerfeld’s revelation of his age, Wikipedia and Voguepedia still state that he is 79 years old – leading some people to question if he is really telling the truth.
