Instagram Adds Tagging Feature: “Photos Of You” Allows iOS And Android Users To Tag People, Things, Brands In Shared Photos [VIDEO]

Instagram introduced a new photo-tagging feature that allows members tag people, things and brands to the photos they upload and share. The new Instagram feature is called "Photos of You." Instagram users can tag any Instagram account to their photos (friend, cat, dog, burger joint, brand, etc.) during the process of uploading a photo.

Whoever is tagged in photos receives a notification and can choose to publicly display the images on their Instagram profile page. Currently, only the user of a photo can tag his or her images.

If the new update bothers users, they can change the setting to ensure photos won't appear on the profile until approved. Users can also remove themselves from photos in which they are tagged.

"When you upload a photo to Instagram, you're now able to add people as easily as you add hashtags. Only you can add people to your photos, so you have control over the images you share. And it doesn't stop at people - you can add any account on Instagram, whether it's your best friend, favorite coffee shop, or even that adorable dog you follow," the company wrote in a blog post.

This move to update Instagram makes the photo-sharing app even more of a group activity.

CNET reported that the company hopes that 'Photos of You' will help to make the Instagram experience more appealing to its active brands. In the new 'Photos of You' section of member profiles, businesses can display photos captured by members of the Instagram community.

For example, Michael Kors can now showcase some of the 900,000 user-submitted photos with the hashtag '#michaelkors' that highlight the designer's products, a spokesperson told CNET.

'Photos of You' is available on Thursday, May 2 for iOS and Android. Users can download or update the app from the Google Play store or App store. Instagram added that members have until May 16 to review the Photos of You section on their profiles before it becomes visible to others.
