Fantasy K-Pop Collab: Lee Hyori + Beyonce

If someone says the term “fierce diva,” who do you think of? For a K-Pop fan the first name that comes to mind is undoubtedly Lee Hyori.

Since her debut as the leader of the famous girl group Fin.K.L, Lee Hyori has been one of the most popular and successful female singers in Korea. Since the disbandment of Fin.K.L, Lee Hyori has had a thriving solo career as both a singer and an actress.

Her story sounds all too familiar, and to American pop fans, Lee Hyori could be considered on the same level with the likes of Beyonce.
Beyonce, too, made her debut as a member of an incredibly popular, best-selling girl group, Destiny's Child, and has since made a name for herself as a solo artist and actress.

They are both known for their sexy appeal, confidence, and musical talents – and a collaboration between the two may just cause the music industry to implode from all the diva fierceness.

Before moving on, one quick note: while she has been routinely been referred to as “Korea's Beyonce” since her performance on Immortal Song 2, SISTAR's Hyorin is nowhere near as fierce as Lee Hyori (yet, that is) and therefore it wouldn't be right to pair her up with such an iconic diva. Apologies to SISTAR fans.

Lee Hyori has just comeback with her first single in three years, "Miss Korea." Her upcoming fifth solo album, Monochrome, is set to be released on May 21. The title single has made a huge splash on the music charts winning the singer an 'all-kill' last week.

Beyonce just released a cover version of Amy Winehouse's “Back to Black” for the Great Gatsby soundtrack and is expected to release her fifth studio album sometime this year.

The most recent releases from Lee Hyori and Beyonce show the singers taking a more mellow, nostalgic approach to their music and both “Miss Korea” and “Back To Black” draw on elements of the past and showcase the diverse vocal abilities possessed by the two divas.

And for those of you not keeping score here – not only did both Lee Hyori and Beyonce release their first solo albums in 2003 while on hiatus from their powerful girl groups, but they are also now on their fifth albums.

They may be branching out these days and trying new things, but their usual styles also would mesh well together. Take the following examples:

“Chitty Chitty Bang Bang” (2010) H-Logic

“U-Go-Girl” (2008) It's Hyorish

“Why Don't You Love Me” (2008) I Am... Sasha Fierce

“Get Me Bodied” (2007) B'Day

The videos are not only overflowing with sex appeal and strong vocals, but they share similar themes, namely the embodiment of what it means to be a powerful woman.

Both Lee Hyori and Beyonce are strong singers and dancers. If they were to collaborate, the song would need to play up these talents.
A dance song with some kick ass choreography – it would have lyrics that are in line with the theme of what it means to be a woman in today's world and music industry – we're talking fast-paced lyrical delivery with intermittent belts and a whole lot of booty shaking.

What do you say, Beyonce?

Better yet – why not a Fin.K.L-Destiny's Child double reunion?

Or is that too many divas for one song to handle?
