Disney Backpedals On New Merida Makeover After Protests - Sort Of, Maybe?

Disney has pulled the Merida makeover. Disney recently decided to give Merida, the animated star of "Brave", a "new look" - which trimmed her waist, made her breasts larger, and made her famously disheveled hair tamer. Merida even has a fancier dress, a more pliant smile, and a giant belt buckle instead of her original bow and arrow. In short, it's like some belovedly-quirky geek in an 80s teen flick got a makeover for prom, turning her into a mean girl. Angry fans launched virulent protests and petitions to bring the original, beloved tomboy Merida back and "#KeepMeridaBrave".

An online petition reads,

"This new Merida is a paler reflection of her former self without the spark and the 'you go girl' quality that her creator intended."

And, it seems, Disney's listened to the uproar. Kind of. Disney said that the image was only created for her official inauguration into the Disney Princess collection and was designed to be phased out. And images of the new Merida have been quietly pulled from the website, returning some merchandise to the original Merida.

The film's Oscar-winning writer, Brenda Chapman, wrote in an email,

"When little girls say they like it because it's more sparkly, that's all fine and good but subconsciously, they are soaking in the sexy 'come hither look' and the skinny aspect of the new version. It's horrible! Merida was created to break that mold - to give girls a better, stronger role model, a more attainable role model, something of substance, not just a pretty face that waits around for romance."

Disney didn't say whether or not the reversion was permanent. In fact, they haven't made any official comment on the matter at all except a vague statement that reads, "Merida exemplifies what it means to be a Disney Princess through being brave, passionate, and confident and she remains the same strong and determined Merida from the movie."

Fans say that's not good enough---so it remains to be seen whether the new, sexualized Merida will pop up again.
