K-Pop Mixtape: Happy Birthday Taeyang!

It's that time of year again – Taeyang's birthday! That's right, the smooth-voiced Big Bang singer with all the right moves is another year older today.

Each year on May 18, Big Bang fans around the world celebrate the birthday of their beloved Young-bae.
This year, however, celebrations are a little different as the singer requested fans not send any gifts and instead use the money on those less fortunate.

Last month Taeyang posted a message to his fans on Twitter saying, “I realize that places here and there are preparing my birthday present, but I'll only take your love and thoughts. :) I already have a lot, so I hope you understand and that you use it somewhere else that needs it more than I do.. I'm thankful for all the love you've given me, and I'll respond with good music!!”

The touching message received a lot of positive responses from fans who then shifted their focus to celebrating the singer's birthday in untraditional ways.

Here at KpopStarz, we'll help you celebrate Taeyang's birthday by celebrating his music career!

“Unfold at a Higher Place” (2002)
Back when Taeyang and G-Dragon were just 14 years old and trainees at YG Entertainment, they formed a rap duo known as GDYB and released “Unfold at a Higher Place” as part of the second YG Family album, Why Be Normal?

“Player” (Wheesung feat. Taeyang) (2003)
A year later, and still thinking he was going to be a rapper, Taeyang recorded “Player” with R&B singer Wheesung. Taeyang is featured in the song with a short rap verse that starts about half way through and lasts about twenty seconds.

“Get Up” (Lexy feat. Taeyang) (2007)
Shortly after the debut of Big Bang, Taeyang was featured on fellow label-mate Lexy's third album, Rush. “Get Up” is the intro song for the album, and Taeyang sings on two other tracks, “Rush” and “Super Fly,” the latter of which also features G-Dragon and TOP.

“Ma Girl” (2006)
Taeyang's first solo single as a member of Big Bang, “Ma Girl” appeared on the group's first full-length studio album, BigBang Vol. 1 – Since 2007.

“Only Look At Me” (2008)
In 2008 Taeyang released his first solo EP, Hot. “Only Look At Me” was one of two singles from the album (the other being “Prayer”) and the music video highlights his superb dance skills and features his Big Bang group mates.

“Friend” (with TOP) (2009)
Taeyang and TOP collaborated on the song “Friend” for the OST to Friend, Our Legend.

“Hallelujah” (with TOP and G-Dragon) (2009)
Another soundtrack single, this time from the hit show IRIS, Taeyang's vocals on “Hallelujah” give dimension to the raps provided by his Big Bang group mates.

“Break Down” (2010)
In 2010 Taeyang released his first full-length solo album, Solar. The album contained the hit singles “I Need a Girl” and “Wedding Dress,” but “Break Down” is a nice change of pace from his usually soulful crooning – the song is reminiscent of his early days as a teenage rapper.

“Tomorrow” (Tablo feat. Taeyang) (2011)
This song from Tablo's first solo album beautifully displays how Taeyang's voice has developed over the years.

“Fantastic Baby” (Big Bang) (2012)
And one can't talk about Taeyang's career without including Big Bang! “Fantastic Baby” has Taeyang in all his shirtless glory showing off his pipes. What more could you want?

Rumors have been floating around for some time now that Taeyang will come back this year with another album, but in the meantime hopefully this recap of his career will keep you entertained.

And, of course, Happy Birthday Taeyang!
