Did The Susan Powell Investigation Do More Harm Than Good?

The Susan Powell investigation closed today, no closer to an answer to the Utah mother-of-two's December 6, 2009 disappearance.

New reports of an alleged affair involving Powell's husband Josh Powell months before her disappearance came before the official announcement of the case closing, CBS reported.

Despite this revelation and further assertion of Josh Powell's brother being "heavily involved" in disposing the body, neither were charged prior to their respective suicides as the investigation drew on.

Josh Powell, after losing custody of the couple's two sons in 2011, ended their lives as well as his own last year in a deliberate house fire, the website About.com reported.

With alleged neck injuries on seven-year-old Charles and five-year-old Branden mostly likely from a hatchet recovered on-site after the fire, Susan's family member continued to grieve years after the disappearance.

"Look what happened," said Susan's mother Judy Cox.

"But I knew that they're supposed to be able to see their dad."

Josh Powell's brother, Michael Powell, also committed suicide by jumping off a parking garage in Minneapolis, according to Fox News.

The suicide occurred after the investigation shifted to Michael after Josh made him the main benefactor of his life insurance policy.

Ultimately, none of the four deaths helped police officials in narrowing down the case.

"This is a circumstantial case," said West Valley City Deputy Chief Phil Quinian."

"We didn't have a body. We don't have a crime scene."

Over three years and several more victims later, Susan Powell remains missing.

"We have searched high and low for what happened to Susan Cox Powell," said West Valley Mayor Mike Winder.

"What happened to Susan that night?"

And was the investigation beneficial in its process, or did it simply take more lives?
