Cannes Film Festival 2013: Heidi Klum's Cannes Dress Impresses Fashion Critics, Stuns Festival Attendees

The Cannes Film Festival 2013 had a subdued opening, thanks to the torrential rain and jewelry heists that hijacked the coverage on the world’s most prestigious film festival. But supermodel Heidi Klum’s Cannes dress and overall look lifted the spirits and turned heads when she attended the premiere of the film “Nebraska” with pal Nicole Kidman and the amfAR Gala. Both events were held Thursday night.

In a strapless metallic design by Marchesa, the supermodel strutted the red carpet of the amfAR gala. And as written by Katie Jones of MyDaily, “if anyone can pull of a gold and tulle dress on the French Riviera, it's Heidi.”

Earlier Thursday evening, Heidi Klum attended the “Nebraska” premiere in an equally show-stealing number. Her dress was studded, had one-sleeve and a thigh-high split and designed by Versace. Jones said, she may not be exactly doing the effortless chic thing with her Cannes Film Festival look, but it was definitely all-out glamorous.

Many critics have praised the look of Heidi Klum with Entertainmentwise blog billing her as one of the best-dressed celebrities to attend the amfAR bash. Hollywood Life made a humorous comparison piece on the 39-year-old supermodel and 20-year-old Selena Gomez, who wore a similar outfit at the Billboard Awards, asking whose legs and thigh-high split is better.

Heidi Klum is known as one of the best supermodels of all-time and regularly gets into the best-dressed list of publications like Vogue, The Huffington Post, ELLE, The Hollywood Reporter and Vanity Fair.

The 66th annual Cannes Film Festival is currently taking place in Cannes, France from May 15-26.

This year’s festival is deemed a subdued one as the opening was peppered with two heists where $4 million worth of jewelry had been stolen, and a torrential downpour in the city that has canceled some red carpet premiers for some films.

American director and Academy-Award winner Steven Spielberg heads this year’s jury.

The prestigious Palm d’Or award, given to the best film in the competition, will be handed out Sunday night. And while this year’s festival has boasted a cinematic feast, no single film is believed to have clearly set itself apart as the frontrunner for the prize.

According to the Associated Press, at least half a dozen films have a realistic chance of winning the Cannes’ top prize. Some of the films in the running for the award include the Coen brothers’ 1960 folk tale “Inside Llewyn Davis,” Paolo Sorrentino's rollicking Roman party "The Great Beauty," Asghar Farhadi's domestic drama "The Past," James Gray's 1920s Ellis Island melodrama "The Immigrant" and Abdellatif Kechiche's lesbian coming-of-age tale "Blue is the Warmest Color."
